ABOUT BASORUN FAJIMI

Basorun fajimi, a direct descendant of Yerombi, became the Mogaji of the family after the death of Yerombi, he became the King (Baale) of Ibadan in 1897 and in 1899 he was elevated further by Alaafin Adeyemi to the position of Basorun making him one of the only four Basoruns in Ibadanland.

Yerombi, a direct descendant from the house of Ladimon in Ilora, left Ilora in the early 19th century looking for more places to conquer and bring under his domain, on his arrival in Ibadan, he settled in an area on the hill, known today as Mapo, he was the first settler in this region and with him came the entire development of the area.

He later went back to Ilora to bring his son, Basorun Fajimi and one of his assistants at the time, Latoosa, who also grew to become a prominent person in Ibadan and went all the way to the rank of Aare Ona Kankanfo.

Our family is believed to extend to as far as Abeokuta in the current Ogun state of Nigeria.

Basorun Fajimi was a very astute warrior and a very capable statesman. His reign in Ibadan brought a period of peace, development and prosperity, including several motor roads, buoyant commerce and the premier train line from Lagos to Ibadan that later impacted the commercial growth of the city until now.

Historical Fact: Basorun Fajimi’s Igbejo is the first story building in the entire Ibadan land and the first building to be constructed with corrugated iron sheet roofing.
